Education Overview

Education Overview

Snowsport Scotland offers a number of different courses to meet the needs of the clubs, facilities and the wider snowsports community. These cover qualifications for Coaches, Instructors and Leaders as well as training for Event Officials. Our qualifications cover the disciplines of Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Park & Pipe and Cross Country Skiing. Each has their own pathway to meet the needs of the discipline and covers from early participation through to international level competitors.

Courses take place year round on artificial slopes and through the winter in the Scottish mountain resorts and are available from age 14 and up. Snowsport Scotland is the only UK snowsports organisation to offer courses for under 16’s and is excited to support those who wish to start on their snowsports career from a younger age.

What is the difference between a Coach, Instructor and Leader?

Whilst they all have similar roles; to support the development of individuals in the snowsports environment, the difference lies within the focus of the participants and the relationship between them.

Coaches lie at the heart of the Snowsport Scotland's clubs and training programmes for developing performance. They support and develop the skills of those who have a focus on competition and usually work with the athletes on a longer term basis, typically all season to many years. They will also look at a variety of off-snow cross training activities to increase the physical literacy of athletes.

Instructors usually provide the first experiences for new particpants and play a crucial role in creating life long passion for snowsports. They typically work with a range of recreational participants who are looking to develop their skills for their own personal motivations and will work at artificial and mountain snowsports facilities, outdoor centres, schools and clubs.

Leaders cover a multitude of roles from sport activation in schools and youth groups to journeying away from resorts in the Scottish mountains. The remit of a Leader can also cover the wider logistics of organising snowsport excursions and the related additional responsibilities required.
